Seeking a Research Scientist (26-1699) (Large-Scale Parallel Numerical Computing Technology Research Team)

RIKEN Kinki, Japan

About the position

The RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS), led by Center Director Satoshi Matsuoka, are threefold, centered around supercomputing: one is to target high performance computation itself as a scientific objective, or namely, the "Science of Computing"; another is to apply the enormous computational power thus obtained to solve difficult scientific problems, or namely the "Science by Computing"; finally, to collaborate with other scientific disciplines that contribute to advances in both sciences, or namely, the "Science for Computing." Our goal is to be recognized as one of the global leadership research centers to advance high-end computational science in this regard.
The Large-Scale Parallel Numerical Computing Technology Research Team is recruiting a research employee to carry out a new theme. The research overview of the laboratory is shown below.
With a view toward the evolving computing landscape—from the K computer to Fugaku and, ultimately, FugakuNEXT—the laboratory conducts research on advanced numerical algorithms and develops software libraries that achieve both high computational efficiency and numerical accuracy while maximizing hardware performance. In recent years, we have advanced research with wide-ranging implications for high-performance computing (HPC), including the development of methods that harness low-precision arithmetic to achieve high-accuracy computations and active engagement in the co-design of algorithms and hardware architectures.

Work content and job description
We invite applications from candidates capable of pursuing research and development in both of the following areas, focusing on core numerical algorithms and software for a broad range of high-performance computing domains that will drive the next generation of computational science.
・Development of eigensolver software for emerging computing environments
The successful candidate will contribute to the modernization and further advancement of EigenExa, a high-performance eigensolver library.
・Research on highly reliable numerical linear algebra based on reproducible computing technologies
The successful candidate will conduct research toward achieving the highest levels of computational reproducibility by leveraging techniques such as verified numerical computation and error-free computation. Particular emphasis will be placed on highly reliable numerical linear algebra based on matrix multiplication using the Ozaki scheme, encompassing theoretical foundations, implementation optimization, and practical applications.
Both research areas are closely related to the investigation, research, and development of numerical library implementations for FugakuNEXT and subsequent generations of supercomputers in Japan and abroad. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with a strong interest in the development of future computing hardware.
The job description may be changed during the contract period or upon contract renewal to the extent described above.

Work experience
Candidates must possess knowledge of numerical linear algebra, numerical error analysis, and verified numerical computation. A fundamental background in computer science is also desirable, including knowledge of and experience in programming with C/C++ and parallel programming using MPI, OpenMP, or other parallel programming models and languages. Proficiency in English communication is also required.

Various systems
Pay increase system :
Salary will be an annual salary based on experience, ability, and performance, and will consist of a base salary and a variable salary. The variable salary will be determined each fiscal year based on experience, ability, and performance.

Supplementary explanation of compensation
RIKEN has implemented a telecommuting system that allows employees to work from home or other locations permitted by RIKEN.
*Eligible to apply for the MEXT Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (Kakenhi).
*RIKEN is actively undertaking initiatives to promote gender equality and diversity, and moving forward with the establishment of a diverse and vibrant research environment. If multiple candidates are found to have the same aptitude following a fair assessment, active efforts will be made to recruit female candidates.
